Understanding your result
The Norwood scale describes a pattern, not an amount. It is not a score out of seven and a higher number is not a grade — it is a description of where hair has receded and how far the front and the crown have progressed toward meeting.
The seven stages

Two things follow that surprise people. Stages III and IV can look very different on two people with the same stage, because the scale tracks the shape of the loss rather than how much hair is left. And moving from III to IV is not “twice as bad” — the steps are descriptive, not measured.
“Between two stages”
Real hairlines do not fall neatly into seven boxes. When a pattern sits between two of them, the honest answer names the nearer one and says it is a close call. An estimate that always sounded certain would be less useful, not more.
What an estimate from two photos cannot do
This matters more than the stage itself:
- It is not a diagnosis. It describes a pattern; it does not identify a cause.
- The conditions were not controlled. Your distance from the camera, the light, the angle and how your hair happened to sit are all unknown. A scan taken under set conditions is measurable; a photo from your kitchen is an estimate.
- It cannot tell you what will happen next. A stage is a description of now. Nothing about it predicts the rate of change.
- It is not a measure of hair density. Two people at the same stage can have very different amounts of hair in the areas they have kept.
If the pattern in your photos does not look like ordinary male-pattern loss, the checker will decline to give a stage at all and suggest you have it looked at by a person. That is the right answer, not a failure — some things need eyes on them.

The estimate is a first look. If you want to know whether anything is actually changing, you need two measurements taken the same way — which is what the baseline scan is for.
